National Scholarship Service
Leadership For Educational Opportunites Since 1947
The services of NSS have long been available to students of all ages and cultural backgrounds." The National Scholarship Service (NSS) was established in 1946 and was incorporated the following year in New York State. Initially, the NSS was formed as a non-profit, independent agency designed to broaden educational opportunities and financial assistance for minority students who sought admission to post-secondary institutions. However, the services of NSS have long been available to students of all ages and cultural backgrounds. Its services are non-discriminate of a family's financial status or to the non-minority population.
Despite the removal of many educational barriers from the paths of minority students, and students in general, there still remains the need for educational assistance programs such as those of the NSS. Because there still remains a large pool of students who are simply not prepared for the college process and lack the knowledge required for seeking the best route for accomplishing his or her educational goals, the NSS continues to respond to the needs of this particular group: primarily the disadvantaged students who want to pursue a post-secondary education.
There are many services and activities which are provided by the NSS to serve its educational communities. Some of these services and activities include, but are not limited to, the following:
STUDENT-COLLEGE INTERVIEW SESSIONS (SCIS):
First introduced in 1963, the SCIS are perhaps the most well-known of the projects sponsored by NSS. The SCIS and recruitment programs are held in 30 cities throughout the United States. The purpose of these sessions is to acquaint high school students with the college admission process, scholarship offerings and to bring about an exchange of information between students and institutional representatives.
FINANCIAL:
The NSS is supported primarily by individual gifts, corporation donations, private foundations, and federal funding.
TAX STATUS:
The agency is tax-exempt under section 501( c ) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. It is not a private foundation and is eligible to receive contributions deductible as charitable gifts for federal income tax proposes.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR GIVING:
The NSS welcomes unrestricted grants to specific program areas. A donor may even limit a gift to program activities or scholarship assistance for students from a specific geographical area.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS:
Thomas W. Dortch, Jr. is the chairman of the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation, Inc., which is the parent organization for NSS, twenty-three member board. |
